Opera Nights in Rome

November 30, 2018

Going to the Opera is one of the finest social pursuits for those who enjoy the art of performance and music. Rome is known as one of the hubs for arts and culture, making it a place that offers a delightful night out to enjoy some quality Opera. And even more so interesting is the fact that it was Italy where opera was initially first conceived in the early 17th century.
We have picked out some of the most famous and interesting places to indulge in a fantastic and unforgettable experience of opera while in Rome.

Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma

Teatro della opera di Roma

This is Rome’s leading opera house that has gained fame and prestige through hosting performances by the world-renowned artists such as Caruso, Gigli, Del Monaco, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballe and Raina Kabaivanska. This opera house also holds an impressive history as it was the place that premiered Puccini’s Tosca. Without a doubt, this is a place to experience something truly magical.
The luxurious interior of this opera house is a shimmering and glamorous example of the Neo-Renaissance style set in a 1920 Fascist exterior. Formerly known as Teatro Costanzi after Domenico Costanzi who was the one that built and financed the construction of the theatre, it was remodelled in 1926 and again in 1958 by the architect Marcello Piacentini. It can seat up to 1600 people and the shape of the amphitheatre gives out the great acoustics. Opera and ballet performances are put on between November and June, and during the summer the programme takes place in the incredible scenery of the open-air Roman Terme di Caracalla.

Rome Opera Omnia

Rome Opera Omnia

Rome Opera Omnia brings you a different experience than the usual classical night at the Opera. The Opera performances are usually held at the glorious Palazzo Doria Pamphilj which adds to an unforgettable experience that will cater to your love for good Italian opera. Composed as a night of opera singing together with an apperitivo or a candlelight dinner and a tour of the private chambers of princess Doria Pamphilj, it amounts to a quite unique evening.
Although the Palazzo is not an opera theatre in the first place, but rather one of the largest and the most magnificent palace in the central Rome, it nonetheless creates an interesting ambient to experience some of the finest opera. The performances are composed of the artist, soprano and tenor followed by the grand piano, together bringing the works of classical composers such as Puccini, Verdi, Bellini and Mozart to life. The programme offered by Rome Opera Omnia is quite diverse and besides opera it also includes a performance of traditional Neapolitan songs, an interesting tour of the Capuchin’s crypt together with a live concert of the Gregorian chant and sacred polyphonic music. The classical aria, the duets and the melodies of the traditional Neapolitan songs together with the majestic Baroque ambient of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj are a unique experience of the spectacular Italian opera.

Salone Margherita

Salone Margherita in Rome

In this lovely and intimate theatre, you can experience what could be called a modern take on an Opera night. Although their programme features concerts, musicals and jazz, there are nights of the opera as well.
With the option of a private dining, while marvelling at the performance in front of you, this place has been praised to be an incredible experience, perfect if you are looking to celebrate something special. The theatre itself is a beautiful attraction, built in 1898 and carrying a name after the Queen Margherita of Savoy. The theatre is an impressive example of Art Nouveau which used to be a leisure spot for the Roman bourgeoisie and hosted some of the most prominent artists of the time.

Caravita Church

Caravita Church Rome Opera

A rather unusual place for an Opera setting is this 17th-century baroque oratory, which was built over the ruins of the late twelfth century Church of San Nicola de Forbitoribus and was the first nocturnal oratory in Rome.
It was here that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a teenager performed for the royal court of Rome in 1770. It is clear that a night of Opera at a place like this is a unique experience that is usually preceded by a fine dinner at a restaurant nearby. Indulge in the excellent performances of the classical masterpieces and the famous Italian opera arias within a truly exceptional atmosphere of this church.
