Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world and common fast food item in Europe and North America. The term pizza was first recorded in the 10th century while it is believed that modern pizza was invented in Naples. Legend has it that Neapolitan pizzaiolo (pizza maker) Raffaele Esposito was called upon to make a pizza for Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita when they visited Naples in 1889. Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pizza swathed in the colors of the Italian flag. That pizza, which featured fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil, is still known as Pizza Margherita today.
